Arrow takes a wider aim with A54-E engine platform

The A54 gaseous fuel engine platform, an industry staple for over 27 years, has undergone a comprehensive technological modernization. By integrating advanced control systems and high-performance aftertreatment, this rugged industrial engine has been positioned for expanded applications in 21st-century markets, notably within the mobile power generation sector.

The updated A54 is an inline six-cylinder, 5.4 L naturally aspirated industrial engine. While its reputation for extreme durability and a fully rebuildable design is retained, a significant shift toward total emissions compliance has been achieved. The platform is now certified to US EPA stationary and non-road mobile standards, capable of operating on pipeline-quality natural gas, propane, or wellhead gas.

Strategic Technical Integration

To achieve a balance of ruggedness and modern performance, a collaboration was formed between Arrow and industry leaders DCL and Woodward:

  • Industrial Aftertreatment (DCL): Rather than utilizing standard automotive-style components, a high-performance DCL three-way catalyst was integrated into the system. Specifically selected for its industrial-grade durability, the catalyst is slightly oversized for the application. This ensures the long-term reliability expectations of customers are met while maintaining strict emissions control.
  • Integrated Control (Woodward): The Woodward PG+ system provides a single, integrated approach to fuel, ignition, and air/fuel ratio control. This allows the engine to adapt to varying fuel qualities—including automatic bi-fuel switching, without manual adjustments or loss of compliance.

Enhanced Versatility and Remote Monitoring

The modernized platform introduces several features to reduce downtime and improve operational efficiency:

  • IoT and Telematics: Engine vitals and diagnostics can now be monitored remotely via J1939 data.
  • Customizable Ordering: Various configurations are available, ranging from basic certified engine kits for OEMs to fully enclosed power units.

The relaunch of the A54 represents a successful bridge between legacy industrial strength and modern environmental requirements, providing a cost-effective, high-reliability solution for the evolving energy landscape.
